F.A.Q

Here you can find some answers to our most frequently asked questions.

How to choose the right artist?

Think through your idea and do your research on different studios and artists. Try to find the artist whose style is the most similar to your idea. If you don’t know which style would suit the best for you, ask different places what they think would be the best approach for your tattoo. In Studio Malm, our shop manager helps to find the best possible artist for every project.

How much does a tattoo cost?

The most frequently asked question is definitely about the prices of tattoos, which is understandable, as every client wants to check the price list before receiving the service. Generally speaking, there is never a single price list for tattoos as you will find with many other service providers. Every client is different, so you need to approach each one individually, taking into account their wishes and ideas. We only do custom tattoos, and therefore we can not provide a general price list, as all tattoos are tailor-made. If you’d like to get a price estimate of your idea, please send us an email at [email protected].

Where is your studio located?

Studio Malm is located in Tallinn, Estonia. We are in Rotermanni Kvartal which is in the heart of the city, 10 minutes walking distance from the port, 20 minutes by car from the airport.

Do you have gift cards?

Unfortunately, we don’t have a gift card option at all. Our artists would like to discuss the themes and options with the client before any money has been paid. Each artist’s style & pricing is different. If you’re looking to get a gift card for your special someone, then we recommend that they contact us directly. If we book an appointment with them, then you can offer them that you’ll either pay a part or the entire amount for them.

How old do you have to be to get a tattoo?

You have to be at least 18 years old to get a tattoo in Estonia.

Are tattoos painful?

Tattoos can be painful because the process involves the insertion of a needle into the skin to deposit ink. The level of pain experienced during a tattoo can vary depending on factors such as the individual's pain tolerance, the location of the tattoo, and the size and complexity of the design.

Can i use any numbing products before my appointment?

It’s illegal in Estonia to use any numbing products throughout the process. Please do not use any numbing products before your appointment since it may complicate the tattooing process and make tattooing and healing more difficult.

When should i not get tattooed?

Overall you should not get tattooed while being drunk, high, pregnant, sunburnt, or sick.

If you know that you have any health-related problems that might compromise tattooing, please let your artist know so we can take it into consideration.

Here are some examples:

Health conditions: If you have certain medical conditions such as a compromised immune system, skin infections, or bleeding disorders, it's best to consult with a healthcare professional before getting a tattoo.

Pregnancy and breast-feeding: It is generally recommended to avoid getting a tattoo while pregnant or breastfeeding due to potential risks to the baby and changes in the body during these periods.

Recent surgeries or medical procedures: It's important to allow your body sufficient time to heal before getting a tattoo, so it's generally advised to wait until you have fully recovered from any recent surgeries or medical procedures.

Skin conditions or infections: If you have active skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, or open wounds, it's best to wait until your skin has healed before getting a tattoo. Tattooing over compromised skin can lead to complications or interfere with the healing process.

Allergies or sensitivities: If you know or suspect that you have allergies or sensitivities to tattoo ink or other tattoo-related products, it's important to discuss this with a tattoo artist and potentially seek advice from a dermatologist.

If you know about your health-related problems, please let your artist know before the session so we can take that into consideration.

If we don’t know your health-related problems beforehand that show up on the appointment day and might compromise tattooing, our artists are not obligated to tattoo you.

Most important things before coming to your tattoo appointment

Every artist has their own ‘’before coming’’ instructions which they’ll send you when you book an appointment, but here are some of the most important ones.

It is crucial to keep the amount of melanin (natural pigment) in your skin as low as possible. So please avoid direct sunlight, especially getting burned or tanned. Please protect the area to be tattooed with clothing. If you have to expose the area to sunlight, please use high SPF (preferably 50) sunblock on the spot. It is also advised against using self-tanning creams.

Please take care of the elasticity of your skin by applying moisturizing lotion or cream (for example coconut oil) on the area every day for one week before the appointment.

When showering, please don’t exfoliate your skin. Exfoliating makes skin renew itself and the new skin is fragile, making it harder to tattoo. This does not mean you shouldn’t shower or wash, just don’t scrub your skin too much. You also do not need to shave the area yourself. If it’s not an area that you don’t usually shave anyway, leave the shaving to the artist.

Do not take any blood-thinning medications or food supplements (for example Omega 3)

Avoid hard liquor and/or heavy training/sports for 24h before the appointment

Make sure to eat a full meal before coming for your appointment.

Stay hydrated

Get a good night's sleep to be well-rested and ready for your day.

If you know your day is going to be long, definitely dress comfortably and make sure your artist has good access to the area that’s going to be tattooed. Wear more loose clothes since your tattoo is going to be wrapped up after it’s finished. Darker colors are better to avoid getting any stains from the process on your light clothing.

Feel free to bring your water bottle or non-alcoholic drinks you prefer, you can also bring snacks with you.

If you know your day is going to be long, you can bring your headphones, a book, etc that helps to pass the time and get your mind off the pain.

How to take care of a fresh tattoo?

Every artist has their own aftercare depending on the style and size of the tattoo.

Overall, these are the most important things in tattoo aftercare:

Keep the tattoo clean

Keep the tattoo moisturized

Treat it as a fresh wound

Avoid swimming and sauna for the first few weeks

Avoid tanning for the first few weeks.

After that use SPF30+ on the tattoo.

Avoid heavy training where you sweat a lot and the tattoo might get a lot of friction

If there’s any crust in the healing process, do not pick it, let it come off naturally.

If there’s anything else you need to know, your artist will tell you and if you forget it, contact your artist and ask.

Do you take walk-in clients?

Studio Malm is open by appointment only.

Can i bring someone with me to my appointment?

Please ask your artist beforehand if it’s okay to take someone with you.

We don’t want it to get too crowded in the studio.

Please do not bring your children with you into the studio.

Studio Malm has a strict 18+ age limit.

Do you do cover-up tattoos or touch-up work for old tattoos?

For a cover-up project, it depends a lot on the existing tattoo.

If our artists can see a good outcome and there’s enough room left to create a nice design, then they’re open for a consultation.

When doing a cover-up, the artists have to keep in mind a few things. The new tattoo’s ink is going to be injected into the same skin layer where the old tattoo already is. That’s why it isn’t possible to cover a dark tattoo with lighter colors. The old tattoo would still remain visible, as it will be a mixture of the new and old colors.

The new tattoo also has to be bigger than the old one. That is mainly because the artists need to move the focal point of the new tattoo away from the old one. That helps to direct the viewer’s eye away and helps to move the focus onto the new tattoo instead.

The best cover-up looks like a regular new tattoo, unlike the artists trying to hide something.

As for touch-up tattoos, our artists do not touch up, redo, or add something to other artists' tattoos.

All of their designs are one-of-a-kind and unique.

Can i bring or create my own design?

All the designs in our studio are custom-made and never made twice. You can send us pictures of your idea and our artists will take it for reference when creating a design.

None of our artists tattoo any pictures that are made by other tattoo artists.

Can you cover stretch marks and scars with tattoos?

Overall, yes, tattoos can be used to cover stretch marks and scars to a certain extent.

However, it's important to consult with your tattoo artist beforehand and tell them that you're looking to get a stretch mark or scar cover-up. They can assess the condition of your skin and provide guidance on the feasibility and potential results of covering your specific stretch marks or scars with a tattoo.

Keep in mind that the success of covering stretch marks and scars with tattoos can vary depending on factors such as the size, color, and texture of the marks or scars, as well as the individual's skin type and healing ability.
